To the Editor:

Roger Cohen characterizes President Obama’s economic efforts as “a touch of France.” He could as easily—and as accurately—have called Mr. Obama’s policies “a touch of Sweden,” “a touch of Britain” or, indeed, “a touch of Canada,” since all these countries and more use socialist programs to meet their countries’ needs.

Even if France were the only socialist-leaning country in the world, we could do worse than learn a thing or two from France. After all, wasn’t it France that warned us not to invade Iraq? Imagine how un-French our economic situation would be right now had we heeded that advice!

Note from KBJ: I disagree with Cohen that "one France is enough." One France is too many! Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion (to quote Jed Babbin). France has made only two worthwhile contributions to the world: Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) and the Tour de France. Okay, three.
