3-10-89 . . . Odds and ends: (1) Richard Cheney, the lone United States Representative from Wyoming, has been named by George [Herbert Walker] Bush to be Secretary of Defense. Nearly everyone, including me, was taken by surprise, since Cheney hadn’t been mentioned for any other administrative position. Cheney is a staunch conservative who once served as chief of staff for President Gerald Ford [1913-2006]. He is intelligent, articulate, and honorable. He is expected to be confirmed with no trouble. (2) I taught my honors class outside this afternoon. Nobody objected to my proposal, so out we went. We sat on the grass on the south side of the Blocker Building, under a small tree. The students formed a semicircle around me, so that everyone could hear everyone else speak. Some sat in the sunlight, others in the shade. What fun! With a high temperature of seventy-eight degrees [Fahrenheit], it was a perfect day for a “field trip”. We discussed amorality and moral negligence.
