To the Editor:
Re “Has a ‘Katrina Moment’ Arrived?,” by Frank Rich, and “Toxic R Us,” by Maureen Dowd (columns, March 22):
In his first two months in office, President Obama has proposed groundbreaking policy initiatives and legislation in the face of considerable opposition from powerful special interests. His budget and tax proposals alone earn him a seat next to Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Mean-spirited negativity often pervades the political process. The media, in turn, expect miracles in public discourse. Isn’t it enough to do a wonderful job creating public policy, and pushing for its passage in Congress?
On the tough shoulders of those considerable achievements, let’s congratulate our new president, Barack Obama.
Instead of projecting our fear, let’s begin to get to know this person in whom we’ve placed our boundless hope and capacity for love.
