Yankee fans (of whom an ungodly number read this blog) probably think it bothers me that their team is in first place. Ha! It doesn't bother me in the least. In fact, I enjoy it, because it means that Yankee fans will have their hopes crushed when and if their team reaches the playoffs. Remember: The Yankees haven't reached the World Series since 2003, and haven't won it since 2000. It's a great time to be a Yankee hater—maybe the best time ever.

Addendum: Twelve teams (Arizona, Anaheim, San Francisco, Florida, Boston, St Louis, the Chicago White Sox, Houston, Detroit, Colorado, Philadelphia, and Tampa Bay) have played in the World Series since the Yankees last won it. I expect this number to rise to 20.

Addendum 2: While rereading this post several hours after composing it, I began to doubt whether it expresses my meaning. Compare the following:

1. Yankee fans (of whom an ungodly number read this blog) . . .

2. Yankee fans (an ungodly number of whom read this blog) . . .

Are these expressions synonymous? I want to say no, but maybe I'm wrong. I now prefer the second formulation, but maybe that's just for stylistic reasons.
