Addendum: Wouldn't it be amazing (not to mention gratifying) if Americans threw Democrats out of office in 2010, at every level of government? It could happen! But it wouldn't be much of an improvement if the Republicans who replaced the Democrats were also big spenders. I still find it incomprehensible how George W. Bush increased the size and scope of government. That is a betrayal of those who supported him. The proper role of government is to provide a framework of rules within which people pursue happiness. It is not to provide people with the means to happiness, and it is certainly not to define "happiness."
