The president of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) is dead. Myles Brand was my teacher at the University of Arizona in the fall of 1984, when he was 42 years old and I was 27. That's a quarter of a century ago. I took his graduate seminar on metaphysics, the focus of which was events. My term paper, on which I received a B- (I received a B in the seminar, one of two Bs I received in graduate school), was entitled "Are There Any Events?" I never understood why Brand left teaching for administration. No amount of money, power, or fame could get me to be an administrator. If I wanted to shuffle paper, I'd have stayed in law. I became a professor so that I could read, think, write, and teach.
Myles David Brand (1942-2009)
