Congratulations to the New York Yankees and their fans. The 2009 World Series is just as I predicted it would be before the playoffs began: the Yankees against the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies. Before the season began, I predicted that my beloved Detroit Tigers would meet the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. That prediction didn't turn out so well.
I just checked Baseball Reference to see whether the Yankees and the Phillies have ever played in a World Series. They have: in 1950. The Yankees swept that series in four low-scoring games, with Whitey Ford winning the clincher. Someone would have to be at least 64 years old to remember the 1950 World Series. By the way, is it legal to be known as "Whitey" these days?
So Alex Rodriguez (a.k.a. A-Rod, a.k.a. Choke-Rod, a.k.a. Choke-Fraud) makes it to a World Series in his 16th Major League season. He probably thought it would never happen. Many of us hoped it would never happen. About 90% of Americans are suddenly fans of the Phillies. I certainly am. I cannot abide another Yankee World Series victory. Indeed, the very thought turns my stomach.
Addendum: Here is the World Series schedule. The Series will end in November, even if there is a sweep. I predict at least one snowed-out game.
