Great news from the great state of Maine. It should be clear by now, if it wasn't already, that Americans don't want anyone messing around with marriage, which exists for the sake of children. Voting is not for dogs; marriage is not for homosexuals. Homosexual couples are entitled by law to cohabit, have sex, purchase a house together, enter into contracts with one another, and bequeath property to one another. They are not entitled, as couples, to participate in an institution that was not designed for them. Individual homosexuals are, of course, entitled to marry someone of the opposite sex.
Addendum: Imagine a pedophile making the following argument:
I happen to be sexually attracted to children. If I am not allowed to act upon my attraction, I am being discriminated against. Equality requires that each person be allowed to act upon his or her sexual attraction, whatever it may be.
We would laugh at such an argument. Sex isn't for children, so you're out of luck if that's what you're seeking. It doesn't matter that you haven't chosen your sexual attraction; that has nothing to do with it. The same is true of homosexuals. Marriage isn't for homosexuals, so you're out of luck if that's what you're seeking. Nobody has a right to pervert an institution, whether it's sex or marriage. In other words, these institutions need not be modified to cater to the peculiarities of individuals, even if those peculiarities are unchosen.
