Here is a New York Times story about Martin Heidegger (1889-1976). Is philosophy a church? Are we now excommunicating members for heresy? Who's next? Marx, for anti-Semitism? Nietzsche, for nihilism and elitism? Aristotle, for racism and xenophobia? Descartes, for disrespecting animals? Kant and Schopenhauer, for misogyny? Hume, for conservatism? Aquinas, for consuming too much food and thereby contributing to global warming? Bentham, for advocating torture? Rawls, for believing in God? Nozick, for making libertarianism respectable? Academia is a profoundly silly place.
Addendum: My friend Dr John J. Ray has some comments on the New York Times story here.
