Meat_dairy Here is Mylan Engel's latest post. Mylan, with whom I attended graduate school at the University of Arizona, is a vegan, which means he consumes no animal products (including dairy and eggs). I'm a demi-vegetarian, which means I consume only certain animal products in small quantities. The only animal products I consume are chicken, fish, and eggs. I have had this diet since February 1981, when I was 23 years old. Is it morally defensible? No. There is no morally relevant difference between chicken, which I eat, and turkey, which I do not. I can explain my diet, in the sense of telling you how it came about, but I cannot justify it. I do think—and here Mylan may disagree with me—that morality (specifically, right conduct) is a matter of degree. It's better (morally speaking) that I eat only chicken, fish, and eggs than that I eat these things plus beef, pork, lamb, turkey, and dairy products. I used to think that I would become a vegan eventually, but I'll probably keep my present diet for the rest of my life.

Addendum: Here is Mylan giving a talk.
