Republicans seriously cannot find a difference between then-Sen. Trent Lott's comments wishing that a racist had been elected president to prevent "all these problems over all these years" and Sen. Harry Reid's poorly worded statements supporting then-Sen. Barack Obama's candidacy to become the first African-American president?

Republicans also seem to forget that President George W. Bush called for Lott's resignation while Obama has accepted Reid's apology.

There is no comparison between these two situations. Those who are accusing Democrats of a double standard are at best being disingenuous with the facts and at worst using race as a political issue.

ROBERT LYNETT, ST. PAUL

Note from KBJ: Are the two differences identified by the letter writer relevant differences? The analogy is weak only if they are. By the way, note the exaggeration: "There is no comparison between these two situations." What he means is that the comparison is weak. By exaggerating, he undermines his credibility.
