1-31-90 . . . George [Herbert Walker] Bush gave his first State of the Union address this evening. It was uneventful, containing the usual platitudes about peace and prosperity and taking uncontroversial “stands” on such things as drug abuse and the need for education. I once thought that Ronald Reagan’s [1911-2004] presidency would come to be known as the “era of good feelings”, but Bush is pushing him aside. He reeks of moderation and coziness.
