Here, courtesy of my friend Jeff, is a review of a new book about Ayn Rand (1905-1982), who has an uncanny ability to get under the skin of philosophers. I suppose it's because most philosophers are soft-headed progressives and Rand was a hard-headed libertarian. Three other factors play a role, in my opinion. First, sexism. Philosophy remains a male-dominated academic discipline. Second, Rand had no philosophical credentials, so she was not part of the club. Third, envy. Rand has a large audience. Most philosophers are lucky to have a few other philosophers read their works. Indeed, most philosophers are unknown and impotent outside of their cubicle.
