Re “The
Spirit of Sympathy
” (column, March 16):

David Brooks
criticizes both Democrats and Republicans for acting with a group
mentality. But, in fact, it is the Republican Party that has been in
lockstep in opposition to everything the current administration has
proposed.

The support of Democrats for these initiatives has
hardly been monolithic. Given the intransigence of Republicans, who
refuse to waver from the party line, it seems that the only way to get
any legislation passed is to use the reconciliation process.

After
all, there was an election, the Democrats won and they have a
responsibility to the American people to deliver on some of the promises
upon which they were elected. Sometimes substance matters more than
form.
