Re “U.S.
Now Trying Softer Approach Toward Karzai” (front page, April 10):

Isn’t
it about time the United States dropped its heavy-handed approach to
conducting foreign policy with dictates like “do this or else”? It might
profitably consider being more respectful toward third-world countries.
It might be surprised at how much it will accomplish.
