To the Editor:

Discontent’s
Demography: Who Backs the Tea Party
” (front page, April 15) sheds
some welcome light on the racially tinged and hypocritical tenets of
this political movement. What we see here is a group of free lunchers
who want less government spending as long as their own federal
entitlements (Social Security and Medicare) are unaffected.

These
antigovernment zealots fail to see how the last three decades of greedy
excess and laissez-faire deregulation worsened the income inequality in
our society and led directly to the recent financial debacle. Without
the strong actions of the federal government in the last 18 months, we
would now be mired in a second Great Depression.

The Tea Party
movement should be openly challenged and exposed as the obstacle to
progress that it represents.

Note from KBJ: Does the letter writer not realize that what he views as "progress" is viewed as regress by others? And why the name calling? "Racially tinged," "hypocritical," "free lunchers," "zealots," "greedy excess," "obstacle to progress." One resorts to name calling only when one's position is weak.
