In response to the article "Guidelines for Nutrition, Fitness Eyed" (May 7): I
think bringing healthy foods into schools will not solve America's
obesity epidemic. The problem lies at home, where the parents are
feeding their children quick and easy meals that are, in most cases,
unhealthy.

Although kids are at school the majority of the day, it is at home
where they adopt bad eating habits. I think parents play a bigger role
than schools do in their child's overall health. It is good that schools
are adopting healthier options for kids, but it is at home where they
learn to eat.

If parents serve healthy foods for their children at home, then
children will be more likely to choose healthier options when they are
on their own.

There is also the option to bring packed lunches to school which,
even after getting "healthier" foods into schools, is probably more
healthy. This can be achieved by packing the right things. A sandwich
and some fruits and veggies will get your kid through the day in a
healthy, affordable manner.
