5-28-90 . . . In baseball, the leaders of their respective divisions after nearly two months of play are Oakland [the Athletics] (the defending World Champion), Milwaukee [the Brewers], Cincinnati [the Reds] (which, surprisingly, has the best record in baseball), and Pittsburgh [the Pirates]. The Detroit Tigers are stumbling along in last place, as in 1989, but they have the overall leader in home runs, Cecil Fielder. Fielder played baseball in Japan a year ago after a couple of years with the Toronto Blue Jays. He’s one of the few brights [sic; should be “bright”] spots in a dark season. [Fielder’s son Prince now plays for the Brewers.]
