To the Editor:
Amos Oz, in his June 2 Op-Ed article, “Israeli
Force, Adrift on the Sea,” says: “No idea has ever been defeated by
force—not by siege, not by bombardment, not by being flattened with
tank treads and not by marine commandos. To defeat an idea, you have to
offer a better idea, a more attractive and acceptable one.”
How was Nazism defeated? Not by force? Not by bombardment, not by being
flattened with tank treads?
How was Fascism defeated? How was Bonapartism in the early 19th century
defeated?
Amos Oz is wrong.
