Walking I love my Garmin Forerunner 305. I used it yesterday on a 35-mile bike ride with my friend Phil, and today I used it on a 4.3-mile walk in the neighborhood. As most of you know, I both run and cycle. Recently, I took up walking on my days off. According to my Garmin, I covered 4.31 miles in 1:06:17.20, which is an average speed of 3.90 miles per hour. I recall walking at a four-mile-per-hour pace in Tucson many years ago, but that was a flat course. The 4.3-mile course has two hills: one short and steep, one long but not so steep. I think I can get up to four miles per hour on this course. Why? Because I stopped to pick up four coins today, which slowed my pace. Also, I started slowly and built up speed. My average heart rate during the walk was 73, which is interesting, because the resting heart rate of the average adult is 72. In case you're wondering how my walking speed compares to my running speed, I averaged 8.29 miles per hour at the Dallas White Rock Half Marathon (13.1 miles) this past December. I run more than twice as fast as I walk!
