To the Editor:

Christopher Brownfield presents several good arguments for stopping the
BP oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico with an explosion (“Blow
Up the Well to Save the Gulf
,” Op-Ed, June 22).

An additional argument is the pressure such a plan or action would put
on companies drilling there. They would realize that failure to stop a
leak will lead to the destruction of the completed well, which might
lead to better backup for failures in the future.
