I love my Garmin Forerunner 305. I've used it in cycling, running, and brisk walking (four miles per hour). Here are the calories burned per hour in each of the three activities:

  • Running: 936-1,017
  • Cycling: 870-971
  • Walking: 343

Here are the calories burned per mile:

  • Running: 123-127
  • Cycling: 54-57
  • Walking: 82
My friend Joe always told me that you burn 110 calories per mile while afoot, whether walking or sprinting. I burn more than that while running and less while walking. By the way, the Garmin calculates calories based on (1) sex, (2) age, (3) weight, and (4) actual heart rate.
