Johan Bruyneel reflects on this year's Tour de France. Part of me wishes Lance Armstrong had not come out of retirement to participate in the Tour. It's sad to see a seven-time winner finish third and 23d. But another part of me is happy to have seen him race again. He showed that he is not indomitable. In a strange way, that makes his seven consecutive victories more impressive. As for the incessant accusations (by Floyd Landis, Greg LeMond, and others) that Armstrong used performance-enhancing substances during his reign, I keep coming back to two facts: first, he has been tested repeatedly; and second, he has never tested positive. Let's give the man the benefit of the doubt.
