To the Editor:
You conclude: “There is no way to fix the nation’s fiscal crisis without
higher taxes now and in the future—and cuts in entitlement programs
down the road.”
Cuts in entitlement programs should begin now and not down the road.
What is required is means testing on Social Security and Medicare. That
combined with a value-added tax would go a long way toward reducing our
unmanageable deficit beginning in 2011.
Also, all the Bush tax cuts should be allowed to expire, except for the lowest tax brackets.
We can’t afford to wait for the economy to recover before getting
serious about fiscal responsibility. Now is the time for action—not
somewhere down the road, which all too often means not doing anything.
