My old friend Bill Vallicella (see the list of links to the right of this post for his blog) is cited in this New York Times column by Gary Gutting. Good work, Bill! By the way, the nasty comments on Gutting's column are invariably anonymous. Why do you suppose that is? Cowardice? Do you suppose any of those people would say such things to Gutting's face? I also love it that so many of the commenters think philosophy useless, merely because it hasn't proved (or cannot prove) either that God exists or that God doesn't exist. How's that for an unreasonable standard of usefulness? It's like saying that government is useless, merely because there are poor people, or that engineering is useless, merely because oil spills occur, or that public education is useless, merely because some high-school graduates can't write.
