10-25-90 Thursday. The news in these parts is that the Texas Rangers baseball team will remain in Arlington. The team was sold a couple of years ago to a group which includes George W. Bush, the president’s son. The new ownership group set about studying the feasibility and desirability of moving the team. The city of Dallas made a pitch for the team, as did the city of Arlington. The main complaints about the present ballpark, Arlington Stadium, are (1) that it seats too few people and (2) that too few of the seats are “prime”. I can attest to the latter, because when I went to the park this past summer I had to crane my neck the entire game to see the batter. I was in a box seat. According to this morning’s Dallas Morning News, the new stadium, which will be completed in time for the 1994 season, will be south of Arlington Stadium in what is now a parking lot. Randol Mill Road, which I take back and forth to school, will run right next to it. In addition to the new stadium, the owners plan to build several shops and restaurants near the river that runs through the parking lot. They also plan to construct a Little League stadium in the shadow of the ballpark. That’ll be great fun for local children, who can imagine themselves moving from the small stadium to the large one some day. I’m pleased that the Rangers will remain in Arlington. Had they moved to Dallas, it would have been a hassle for me to get to and from the ballpark.
