12-20-90 . . . Ernie Harwell [1918-2010], longtime radio announcer of Detroit Tiger baseball games, has been informed that 1991 is his final year. Tiger fans, including me, are in an uproar, because if ever one person represented an entire sports franchise, it is Ernie. His smooth voice is familiar to nearly everyone in the state, even those who aren’t baseball fans. Team management has no class. Ernie, who is seventy-odd years old, wants to work three more years; the Tigers have given him one. I hope Tiger fans boycott the games next season. [Ernie died recently, at the age of 92. Everyone loved him.]
