In his new book, Eugene Robinson explains (perhaps unwittingly) why race-based preferential treatment is unjust. I think many Americans would support programs of preferential treatment if it were based on socioeconomic status rather than race. Why should a middle-class or upper-class black get preference over a poor or working-class white? Barack Obama's daughters are three-quarters black. They are privileged in every conceivable way. Yet, they are eligible for preferential treatment.
