IMG_1892 Katherine and I had a romantic weekend in San Antonio, which is 282 miles from our home in Fort Worth. I had never been there. We drove down Saturday morning, taking U.S. Highway 281 rather than Interstate Highway 35. I enjoyed driving through small towns such as Hico, Hamilton, Lampasas, Burnet, and Marble Falls, stopping occasionally to rest or take pictures. The weather was beautiful. That evening, we ate dinner (fajitas) at Cha-Cha's. Sunday morning, we attended mass at San Fernando Cathedral (founded in 1731) in downtown San Antonio. (This past June, in case I didn't write about it, we attended mass at Ste. Anne's Catholic Church [founded in 1780] on Mackinac Island.) After church, we visited the Alamo and traipsed along the Riverwalk in our jackets. (The morning chill eventually gave way to warm sunshine.) Unfortunately for us, the river is being dredged this month, so there were no boats to ride in. Instead, we got to watch utility workers wading in the sludge. We ate dinner Sunday evening at Pappadeaux, which is one of our favorite restaurants. Monday morning, after a restful sleep and a hearty breakfast, we drove back to Fort Worth on Interstate 35, through New Braunfels, San Marcos, Austin, Temple, and Waco. I'll say more about the Alamo in a subsequent post.
