Here is a New York Times column about the progressive bias in academia. As someone who has been both a progressive and a conservative, and who has spent his entire adult life in academia, I can attest to the bias. What I don't understand is why progressives don't rebel at the stifling uniformity of the place. Why would you want to be surrounded by like-minded people? Why would you not want to have your ideas and values challenged? How else are you going to learn and grow? Academia should be a place of robust intellectual diversity, where ideas and values contend for acceptance. That it is not such a place testifies to the insecurity of progressives. They would rather draw into their comfortable cocoons than take flight.
