Many have applauded the promise of liberty, which seems in the offing for the Egyptian people. However, it is instructive to recall the words of Edmund Burke, written just after a similar uprising in France: "The effect of liberty to individuals is, that they may do what they please; we ought to see what it will please them to do, before we risk congratulations, which may be soon turned into complaints."
Strikingly, these words were written before the appearance of Robespierre and the Reign of Terror.
