I had an enjoyable ride today with my longtime friend Phil Kevil. Phil and I met nearly 20 years ago, as members of the Texas Wheels Cycling Club. We have done hundreds of rallies together, plus countless training rides. Our course today was in Palo Pinto County. We began on the western outskirts of Mineral Wells, rode northwest to Graford (home of basketball coach Billy Gillispie), rode south to Palo Pinto, did a huge loop that took us over Palo Pinto Lake, and rode east to Mineral Wells. We covered 63.67 miles in 4:13:37, which is a leisurely pace of 15.06 miles per hour. If you count our stops, we were on the road for five hours. I reached 40.1 miles per hour on one of the steep hills between Mineral Wells and Graford.

I hadn't seen Phil since fall, so we had a lot of catching up to do. Here is Phil in the first hour, with a spectacular backdrop (click to enlarge):
