4-5-91 . . . In two days, two United States Senators were killed in airplane crashes. One, John Heinz [1938-1991], was a member of the Senate when he died; the other, John Tower [1925-1991] of Texas, has been out of the Senate for a few years. Both were Republicans and both were wealthy (Heinz was heir to the catsup fortune). A couple of years ago, Tower was rejected by the Senate after being nominated by George [Herbert Walker] Bush to be Secretary of Defense. Furious, he wrote a scathing book about the hearings and was on the promotional circuit when he died. He was bitter to the end.
