I bought Katherine an iPad 2. It arrived yesterday. I chose the black model with Wi-Fi (but not 3G) capability, 16 GB of storage, and a pink foldable cover. The iPad runs on our home network. It found the Internet connection automatically. We had a few problems setting up e-mail and Facebook, but eventually solved them. The screen is beautiful. I already downloaded a free book (Aristotle's Ethics) and found an "app" for the New York Times. Katherine loves the iPad. I do, too. I may buy one for myself, thus breaking my vow never to own an Apple product.
