A puritan is a person who is offended by the mere thought that someone, somewhere, is having fun. A progressive is a person who is offended by the mere thought that someone, somewhere, is making a profit.

Walmart employs millions of people. It offers goods and services that its customers would not otherwise have, at a price they can afford. Walmart coerces nobody. And yet, it is despised by progressives. The reason runs deep. Progressives hate what sociologists call intermediate institutions: families, churches, eleemosynary institutions, municipal governments, and business corporations. They want only two social tiers: (1) individuals and (2) an overarching, monolithic government that is capable of running those individuals' lives. There is one exception to this rule: labor unions.

Think about it. Act accordingly.
