  • Waking up each morning, I used to feel reasonably assured over the past few decades that the country was being led by someone who, while I may not agree with his tax policies or, at the very worst, his decision to invade another country, was nevertheless politically capable. These former leaders were not likely to knowingly and foolishly stoke divisions between the citizens of the United States, or to purposefully instigate tensions between the U.S. and other world leaders. Now, I ache for a true leader and for any assurance that someday, some kind of saneness will return us to a stable reality—because the reality we currently live is often nightmarishly surreal.

A true leader wouldn’t mimic a person who has a disability. A true leader wouldn’t deny John McCain’s heroism. A true leader wouldn’t define even a small percentage of white supremacists as “very fine people.” A true leader wouldn’t want to repeal health care for millions just because his predecessor’s name is associated with it. A true leader wouldn’t incite violence at his rallies. A true leader wouldn’t take the armed services backward by attempting to ban transgender people from honorably serving. A true leader wouldn’t purposefully disparage NFL players to gain some kind of footing with his base.

A true leader wouldn’t do all of these things to cloud the extremely serious issues of our times: hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, climate change, health care for all, and, Lord knows, North Korea. A true leader would at least try to heal, rather than further divide.

  • Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) 16 (Painting by Gottlieb Doppler in 1791 When Kant Was 67)Sexual union (commercium sexuale) is the reciprocal use that one human being makes of the sexual organs and capacities of another (usus membrorum et facultatum sexualium alterius). This is either a natural use (by which procreation of a being of the same kind is possible) or an unnatural use, and unnatural use takes place either with a person of the same sex or with an animal of a nonhuman species. Since such transgressions of laws, called unnatural (crimina carnis contra naturam) or also unmentionable vices, do wrong to humanity in our own person, there are no limitations or exceptions whatsoever that can save them from being repudiated completely.

(Immanuel Kant, The Metaphysics of Morals, trans. and ed. Mary Gregor, Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy, ed. Karl Ameriks and Desmond M. Clarke [Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1996], 61-2 [first published in 1797] [italics in original])
