What happened in Charlottesville, Virginia, is nothing short of domestic terrorism carried out by many hate groups. Our president had a difficult time in accepting the fact that this kind of crime was carried out by misguided hate mongers who happen to be white and Christian. Wonder how many tweets the president would have written if this act was carried out by a member of a minority?
Is it not ironic that house bill HR 257, introduced by Rep. Barbara Comstock of Virginia and supported by many organizations, including EMGAGE, a coalition partner of COSMOS (Coalition of South Florida Muslim Organizations), is languishing in various committees?
We at COSMOS urge our local congressional representatives to support this bill and send a clear message to hate mongers in condemning hate crimes and any other form of racism, religious or ethnic bias, discrimination, and incitement to violence or animus targeting a minority in the United States.

I want to applaud the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate. Our country will soon come together as one!

Here are four statuary principles:
- All statues honoring Confederate officers should be dismantled.
- All statues honoring Confederate sympathizers should be dismantled.
- All statues honoring supporters/defenders of slavery should be dismantled.
- All statues honoring slaveholders should be dismantled.
The first principle covers Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, but not George Washington or Thomas Jefferson. The second principle covers Robert E. Lee, Union General George McClellan, and Union Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer, but not George Washington or Thomas Jefferson. The third principle covers George Washington and Stonewall Jackson, but not Thomas Jefferson or (arguably) Robert E. Lee. The fourth principle covers George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, but not those Confederate officers or sympathizers who weren't slaveholders.
As this shows, different principles have different implications. One wonders whether the people demanding dismantlement have given the matter serious thought. Perhaps, if they did give the matter serious thought, they would endorse all four principles.
