  • Neil M. Gorsuch[W]hile it is of course our job to apply faithfully the law Congress has written, it is never our job to rewrite a constitutionally valid statutory text under the banner of speculation about what Congress might have done had it faced a question that, on everyone’s account, it never faced. See Magwood v. Patterson, 561 U. S. 320, 334 (2010) (“We cannot replace the actual text with speculation as to Congress’ intent”).

    (Henson v. Santander Consumer USA Inc., 582 U.S. ____ [2017] [slip opinion, page 9])

Note from KBJ: All nine justices, including the four lawless ones, signed this opinion. Replace the term "statutory text" with "executive order" and the word "Congress" with "the president." What do you get? You get the Supreme Court declining to rewrite President Trump's constitutionally valid executive order that bans travel to the United States from seven terroristic Middle Eastern countries. Paraphrasing Magwood, "We cannot replace the actual text of the executive order with speculation as to the president's intent." President Trump will win at the Supreme Court. The ruling might even be unanimous. Write it down.

  • To the editor:

Calls for civility in the wake of the shooting in Alexandria, Va., are beside the point. The deranged will always be with us. What is more to the point is to deny the deranged the means of carrying out their mayhem. (“A shooting in Alexandria brings gun violence directly to those best situated to act,” editorial, June 14)

It would be inappropriate to describe the Republican healthcare bill and their devious and dishonest way of avoiding scrutiny in anything but the most uncivil terms. Giving President Trump the courtesy of civility would obfuscate the true nature of his contempt for democracy.

Now is not the time for timidity in our discourse.

    Charles Berezin, Los Angeles

Note from KBJ: I agree, Charles. You're a creep, a punk, and a moron.

  • Simon Spilak of Slovenia (not to be confused with Slovakia) finished fifth in today's individual time trial, which was good enough to win the overall title (general classification) of the Tour of Switzerland. Here is his final kilometer in Stage 9. The Tour de France begins on 1 July in Dusseldorf, Germany.
