  • To the editor:

The most qualified presidential candidate in U.S. history, a woman, lost to the least qualified, a macho man with a history of reprehensible statements and actions.

President-elect Donald Trump’s misogynist supporters feel threatened by women in power who are competent and experienced. So what kind of woman would they have voted for? A stripper or a centerfold?

Clearly, most American men are not man enough to vote for a qualified woman.

    Kerry Meade, Reseda

Note from KBJ: I have a different take. A fabulously accomplished businessman who loves his country and its people defeated a criminal. I have said it many times, but I'll say it again: The first female president will be a Republican. The only question is whether Kerry Meade will support that woman.

  • Imagine the following dialogue between a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and a fan of the New York Yankees, following the 1960 World Series:

Pirate fan: Yay! We won the World Series!

Yankee fan: Actually, you have no reason to celebrate or to feel good about yourself or your team, because the Yankees outscored the Pirates, 55-27, in the seven-game series.

Pirate fan: What does that matter? We won four games, whereas you won only three.

Yankee fan: But we blew you out in games two, three, and six. The scores were 16-3, 10-0, and 12-0.

Pirate fan: True, but we beat you four times.

Yankee fan: Big deal! The scores of the games you won were 6-4, 3-2, 5-2, and 10-9.

Pirate fan: It doesn't matter how big the victory margin is, as long as you score more runs than the opponent. Surely you know that.

Yankee fan: Your World Series victory is tainted. The Yankees were the dominant team.

Pirate fan: I disagree. It's not how many runs are scored in the aggregate, but how they are distributed. The Pirates distributed their 27 runs in such a way as to win four games. The Yankees distributed their 55 runs poorly.

    Yankee fan: You suck.

    Pirate fan: Sore loser.

See any similarity between this dialogue and the dialogue taking place between supporters of Donald Trump and supporters of Hillary Clinton? (By the way, the analogy comes from Rush Limbaugh. I merely developed it.)

  • Recently, I saw a ‘baby-boomer’ white male interviewed about why he voted for Donald Trump. He said that Hillary Clinton felt she was above the common people and did not understand the challenges facing the common people. What?

So you voted for Trump, who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and started his troubled business career with a multimillion-dollar ‘loan’ from his father?

So you voted for Trump, who has been involved with more than 3,500 lawsuits in recent decades, most all involving honest, hard-working people, businesses, and students who he has cheated, defrauded or stiffed, sending many into bankruptcies and worse.

So you voted for Trump, who was so patriotic that he schemed his way out of the military draft.

So you voted for Trump, who lives in a gold-plated mansion in an enormous tower in downtown Manhattan.

This is the guy you feel understands the challenges of the common people? This is the greatest example of the failure of our educational system to teach its’ [sic] students critical thinking skills. Too many people are unable to understand what is in their own basic self-interest.

    Sad.

    PAUL C. HUNT, SOUTH MIAMI

Note from KBJ: You're the one who needs a critical-thinking course, Paul. The choice was not between Donald Trump and someone "of the people." It was between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, who never met an ordinary person she understood or cared about.

Today's 34.3-mile ride breaks my all-time annual mileage record of 6,205.9 miles, which I set in 1990 when I was 33 years old. So far this year (2016), I've pedaled 6,218.6 miles. I'm in my 36th year of cycling. I took this picture of myself (click to enlarge) at the 24.4-mile mark of the ride, where I usually stop for a few minutes to eat cheese crackers and look at my iPhone. The weather today was gorgeous. I plan to ride a couple more times this year, so I'll hold off on the statistical barrage until I'm done.
