Today is the first day of fall classes for me. I'm beginning my 33rd year of teaching at the University of Texas at Arlington. It's been quite a ride. Many things have changed since that first day in August 1989. The university's enrollment is much larger; there are many new buildings and parking structures on campus; we've been through several presidents and provosts; the average student is less literate (probably because of cellphones and computer games); the average student is fatter (probably because of cellphones and computer games); and I have a few more gray hairs.

We're still teaching under COVID-19 conditions. I spent the entire 2020-2021 academic year teaching online, which, believe it or not, I enjoyed. We're trying something different this semester: hybrid teaching. To reduce classroom "density," only half of my students meet on a given day (say, Tuesday). The other half meet on the other day (Thursday). Since not everyone is present for every lecture, the instructor must record the lecture and make it available to all. It's far from ideal, but it's what we have to deal with.

I'm thinking two more years until retirement. That will give me 34 years at UTA and one year at Texas A&M, for a total of 35 years.
