Re: “After four years, here’s why this never-Trumper is voting for Trump,” Oct. 11 commentary

How disingenuous is Krista Kafer’s commentary in favor of reelecting Donald Trump! First, she creates commonality with many who are disgusted by his immorality, by claiming that she, too, was once a “never-Trumper.” Then she “grudgingly” concedes she must cast her vote for him after all.

Why? Well, she repeats old canards about the passage of the Affordable Care Act. She mourns her British friend, whose death she blames on “socialized medicine,” apparently implying that her friend would have fared better in the United States without any health insurance at all.

She extols Trump’s disastrous response to the coronavirus, which cost tens of thousands of American lives, in part by making apple-to-orange comparisons with infectious diseases whose worldwide spread was less pervasive.

She applauds Trump’s gutting of regulations (“regulatory overreach”) that protect the air we breathe and the water we drink, not to mention laws that stand between us and the juggernaut of climate change.

She thrills that Trump avoided starting “protracted military engagement,” forgetting that the last president who got us into such engagement with Iraq and Afghanistan was NOT a Democrat.

Kafer leaves out Trump’s fomenting of racism, his scapegoating of particular ethnic groups, his attempts to rig the election by destroying the postal service, and his pandering to Putin and other unsavory dictators.

So while Kafer simply sees no choice but to give this administration four more years to drive America deeper into corruption and ruin, the rest of us do have a choice.

Judge Amy Coney Barrett is now an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. The Senate vote, completed minutes ago, was 52-48. Justice Barrett will take her place on the Court as soon as she is sworn in, which should be tomorrow. I understand that Justice Clarence Thomas will swear her in.

Donald Trump has now appointed three of the nine current justices, and, if re-elected (as I expect he will be), should get two or three more appointments before he leaves office in January 2025. Justices Thomas, Sotomayor, and Breyer are the most likely to leave the Court, through retirement or death.

Seven of the nine justices (Roberts, Thomas, Alito, Sotomayor, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett) are Roman Catholic (or, in the case of Neil Gorsuch, were raised in the Roman Catholic Church). Two justices (Breyer and Kagan) are Jewish. There are no Protestants.

Only one justice (Barrett) attended a non-Ivy League law school (Notre Dame).

There are three women (Sotomayor, Kagan, and Barrett) on the Court.

There is one African-American (Thomas) and one Hispanic (Sotomayor) on the Court.

Chief Justice John Roberts is no longer the swing vote. It used to be that he could go with the four "conservatives" or the four "liberals," forming a majority. Now the five "conservatives" can form a majority without him. I expect a lot of 6-3 opinions in which Roberts joins the five "conservatives" so that he can write the majority opinion.

Roe v. Wade, the 1973 abortion case, will be overruled. It was a mistake when it was decided and it is still a mistake. This will put the issue of abortion back where it belongs, with the states. Some states will have liberal abortion laws and some, such as Texas, will impose restrictions.

I said when I voted for Donald Trump in 2016 that I wanted two things from him. I wanted him to defeat the harridan Hillary Clinton, which was accomplished, and I wanted him to give the country a "conservative" Supreme Court. He has given me everything I want and more.

It’s been so darn hard these past four years. In the beginning, no one would even admit to voting for President Donald Trump. Then you find out some of your family voted for him. Then the worst years in the history of our democracy happen when Trump acts upon your worst fears.

And most, if not all, of our Republican leaders fall in line with him.

Our citizens now have the opportunity to take back our country. Do it, America.
