Re: Sept. 20 article, “Battle looms for court seat.”

I used to believe that Sen. John Cornyn was a man of principle. But for nearly four years he has demonstrated that his governing principal [sic] is maintaining his office through fealty to President Donald Trump.

His silence is deafening. Trump lies continuously? Not a problem. Trump blackmails a foreign government to try to get dirt on his opponent? Shrug. Trump refuses to mount a national effort to contain the deadly coronavirus? Well, OK. And now, following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the rock-solid principle so vigorously advanced four years ago that any confirmations must await the word of voters in an election year has mysteriously disappeared.

I still receive donation requests from Cornyn’s campaign, urging me to stand up for “Texas Values.” And I will, this year, by voting for Democrats. I still believe “Texas Values” include respect for truth, fair play, hard work and equal justice under the law.

I will be strongly demanding a Drug Test of Sleepy Joe Biden prior to, or after, the Debate on Tuesday night. Naturally, I will agree to take one also. His Debate performances have been record setting UNEVEN, to put it mildly. Only drugs could have caused this discrepancy???

At least Sen. Mitt Romney is honest about it. I’m not sure if this statement is correct, but he said, “The historical precedent of election-year nominations is that the Senate generally does not confirm an opposing party’s nominee but does confirm a nominee of its own.” So he’s saying that GOP senators blocked Barack Obama’s election-year nomination because they could, and will confirm Donald Trump’s election-year nomination because they can.

Four years ago, they talked about letting voters decide. Now they talk about the “constitutional duty” to appoint a Supreme Court justice. They reveal what total hypocrites they are. Why can’t they just say this is a pure political power play that they will win because they have the votes and not be pompous about it?

The Supreme Court’s reputation will be further eroded, as the court will be seen even more as a GOP political tool. Independent and fair-minded? That’s become laughable.

What will it look like if the 2020 election is very close, and is decided by the Supreme Court, with Trump’s appointees handing him the victory? The fallout of that would be very serious.
