John Jamieson Carswell (J. J. C.) Smart (1920-2012) was born 100 years ago today, to Scottish parents who lived in England. His father was Professor of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge. At the age of 30, Smart (known to his friends and colleagues as Jack) moved to Australia, where he spent the rest of his long life. I consider him one of the best philosophers of the 20th century. His works in ethics are both perspicuous and perspicacious. I wrote the entry on Smart for The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Utilitarianism (2013). When I wrote to him many years ago, out of the blue, he kindly wrote back right away. I wish I had gotten to know him better. Here is an obituary by one of Smart's students.

Democrats are “heartless”. They don’t want to give STIMULUS PAYMENTS to people who desperately need the money, and whose fault it was NOT that the plague came in from China. Go for the much higher numbers, Republicans, it all comes back to the USA anyway (one way or another!).

Re: “Report: Trump disparaged U.S. war dead as ‘losers,’ ‘suckers’ ” [Sept. 3, Nation]:
I am both incredibly enraged and full of fear. I am enraged at President Donald Trump, who so often has disparaged the men and women in the military who have been wounded, captured or gave the absolute sacrifice with their lives.
My only grandson is serving his country and is presently in an elite military program that comes with a good deal of risk. I fear for his well-being. No matter what happens to my motivated and altruistic young grandson, he will never be a loser or sucker no matter what his commander in chief says.

Note from KBJ: You're an idiot, JoAnne. President Trump didn't say what you think he said. Are you watching CNN again?
