The continuing support of Donald Trump by his supporters, without fail, over the last four years, regardless of his incompetence, illegal actions and unpresidential ways, reflects just how low American society has reached.

It baffles many. How can mature adults accept outlandish behavior from a president? Do you accept this behavior in people in society?

Don’t you hold a president to a higher standard?

Can you say you are proud of your president when he pushes falsehoods and conspiracy theories? When he race-baits, calls women nasty, calls Haiti, El Salvador and African nations “s**t-holes countries,” calls neo-Nazis “very fine people” and stokes division with his rhetoric?

Whenever Trump is finally out as president this period should go into the trash bin of history and end up just a temporary glitch in our story.

The words in the cartoon that appears below the Sept. 3 editorial (”When Oak Park’s mayor isn’t liberal enough for protesters”) perfectly encapsulate it: “The firestorms continue to be fanned by a tsunami of hot air.” Of course it was awful that the protesters trashed the Oak Park mayor’s home. He should have had them all arrested.

What completely baffles me as a longtime reader of the Chicago Tribune is not just the editorial board’s level of outrage. It is why we have seen no editorial outrage on, say, the actual threat to democracy caused by the destruction of Postal Service property—with the purpose of compromising mail-in voting? Is that “how democracy works?” I would say the Post Service deserves at least as much editorial outrage as the house in Oak Park.

I could go on, but we all know the litany of harm and death this president has caused through nonfeasance and malfeasance, including the 186,000 deaths and rising of Americans because Donald Trump didn’t want the coronavirus to interfere with the stock market and his reelection campaign.

I really hope the members of the editorial board take a deep breath and open their eyes to what is happening before them.

Trump’s press conference was masterful. I listened to it on CSPAN Radio while riding my bike.

The “journalists” (i.e., attack dogs) are going to learn soon that he’s playing with them. Early on, a woman asked him whether his comments about John McCain years ago made it easier for people to believe that Trump called dead American soldiers “losers.” Trump went on for five to 10 minutes about what he’s done for the troops and about how McCain was “in favor of wars.” It’s a policy difference, don’t you see? He didn’t call McCain any names, but he reminded people that McCain was a warmonger who didn’t give a damn about American lives.

Journalists ask specific questions. Trump takes the topic and says what he wants about it. If I were a journalist, I’d cut my losses and boycott the press conferences, because each one makes Trump more popular.
