Why do people think President Donald Trump doesn’t know what he’s doing with the spike in coronavirus cases? If you are counting marbles rather than people, then the numbers, percentage-wise, really don’t add up to much. COVID-19, the disease itself, affects the poor (for societal reasons, many people of color) and liberal urban dwellers disproportionately. These are not Trump-supporting demographics.

Thus, Mr. Trump calls for cramming kids back into schools while his Republican supporters at the state and federal levels support loosening society up even more instead of extending further, significant assistance to small businesses and the unemployed.

So, as a re-election strategy, Mr. Trump knows who he wants walking around, living and breathing, and who he might care a little less about. He is letting the coronavirus run its course, given who it’s most affecting. And maybe, if time’s on his side, he can take credit for the vaccine, wiping away all memory of his indifference and incompetence.

Virginia Heffernan is too kind to Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) and other Republicans who refuse to wear masks, for their stupidity is just another manifestation of their cultish belief in President Trump.

If Trump calls the virus the “China Virus,” so must his followers. If he says mail-in voting leads to fraud and that there is no Russian interference in our elections, or that he is the greatest of all presidents, then so say the faithful.

On the other hand, there is a certain logic in this for Republican political candidates. After all, if they don’t slavishly follow their master, they might not get elected, thus confirming founding father James Madison’s fears: “I go on this great republican principle, that the people will have virtue and intelligence to select men of virtue and wisdom. Is there no virtue among us? If there be not, we are in a wretched situation.”

Up until the last few weeks of World War II, millions of Germans still believed their Fuhrer would rescue them from defeat and ruin. But of course we are more virtuous and wise than they were, right?

Donald Trump's approval rating is 51%. Barack Obama's approval rating at the same point of his presidency (3 August 2012) was 44%.

So Crazy Nancy Pelosi said horrible things about Dr. Deborah Birx, going after her because she was too positive on the very good job we are doing on combatting the China Virus, including Vaccines & Therapeutics. In order to counter Nancy, Deborah took the bait & hit us. Pathetic!
