  • ….of PROTESTERS killed in Iran itself. While Iran will never be able to properly admit it, Soleimani was both hated and feared within the country. They are not nearly as saddened as the leaders will let the outside world believe. He should have been taken out many years ago!

  • The Mosquito Coast (1986)Yesterday evening, Katherine and I watched The Mosquito Coast (1986), which I own on DVD. Katherine had never seen the movie, but I saw it a couple of times many years ago and wanted to watch it again. (I recently purchased the soundtrack, which is terrific.) The movie stars Harrison Ford as Allie Fox, Helen Mirren as his wife, and a young River Phoenix as his oldest son. It's about a cranky inventor who thinks the United States is going downhill fast. To escape the rot, he takes his family of five to live in the jungles of Belize (where the movie was shot). His energy and vision produce a comfortable life for him, his family, and the locals, but everything falls apart when three unsavory characters elbow their way in. The movie is a morality tale about excessive zeal. It also has some lessons about excessive trust. The wife places too much trust in her husband, with the result that she endangers her children.

    Here is the trailer.

  • I read with dismay Lisa Friedman’s report “Trump ’clarification’ imperils protection of birds” (The Nation, Dec. 25). Why would some in Trump’s administration and Trump himself be so hostile to nature? Don’t they understand that the very foundation of economies that extract resources depends on the abundances of our natural world? Why doesn’t Trump display any affinity for other living species? Then I realized that his experience with nature has been informed through hours playing golf on manufactured, fertilized, watered and insecticide laden landscapes. In these settings one aspires to shoot an eagle or at least knock off a few birdies.

  • ….had happened to a Presidential candidate, or President, who was a Democrat, everybody involved would long ago be in jail for treason (and more), and it would be considered the CRIME OF THE CENTURY, far bigger and more sinister than Watergate!
