  • To the editor:

Stein makes a compelling case regarding elitism and the 2016 election, but I believe the case against political elitism is just a well-honed propaganda tool.

Hillary Clinton, who won the popular vote in 2016, did not come from a wealthy family yet built a stunning resume from hard work. Warren attended a public law school. We know the rest of the story.

President Trump has made a career out of being the rich spoiled guy. If having the audacity to bleed through a billion dollars in failed business ventures isn’t elitist, I don’t know what is.

Trump doesn’t represent corporate elitists; he is the corporate elite.

    Bethia Sheean-Wallace, Fullerton

Note from KBJ: Trump may be elite, in that he's highly educated (Ivy League MBA) and has a lot of money, but he's not an elitist. He proudly and happily serves the people. By the way, Bethia. To be in business is to fail. Some people learn from their failures; some do not. Trump learned. He is fabulously successful.

  • Regarding “Shameful smearing of a soldier” (Editorial, Oct. 30): Why be surprised that President Trump and his allies decided to smear the reputation of Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, an Army officer and the National Security Council’s top Ukraine expert, who testified that a meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was offered as a quid pro quo for political probes?

Trump, who avoided service in the Vietnam War due to a highly questionable claim of bone spurs, previously smeared the late Sen. John McCain, who did serve in that conflict and was held as a prisoner of war. Trump shamefully claimed that McCain wasn’t a real war hero and asserted that he liked people who weren’t captured. For this so-called commander in chief to now attack Vindman, an Iraq War veteran who received a Purple Heart, shows that he is only capable of bullying those who truly personify a word that historians will never associate with him: courage.

    Marcus Finnerman, San Francisco

Note from KBJ: Who cares what Vindman felt about the call. We don't need his interpretation of what was said. We have the transcript. Read it! Are you suggesting that members of the military may not be cross-examined, Marcus? Seriously?
