  • It’s bad enough that the spineless Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, and most of his fellow Republicans are kneeling before the man in the White House, thereby relinquishing the authority of Congress as an equal branch of the US government. But now the Supreme Court has fallen in line with those who are willing to diminish the power of our legislative branch, by allowing Trump to divert funds allocated by Congress for our military to pay for his political sideshow of a border wall.

As too many legislators and justices kowtow to an imperial president, we should heed the warning of one who knows him well: his former attorney, Michael Cohen. Cohen warned that Trump won’t give up power voluntarily.

Let us not forget the lessons of the events that led to the rise of fascism in Germany 80 years ago. In my opinion, the impeachment of Trump cannot come soon enough.

Thirty years ago today, on 1 August 1989, I defended my Ph.D. dissertation (entitled “Constitutional Interpretation”) at the University of Arizona. I was blessed to have three great scholars on my committee: Joel Feinberg (the director), Ron Milo, and Allen Buchanan. Here we are (click to increase the size of the image), outside the Social Sciences Building, immediately after the oral examination. Needless to say, this was one of the happiest days of my life.

  • I’ve always believed that racism was, in fact, more related to social class than to color or ethnicity. Now I’m floored. President Trump’s insistence on trashing not only women of color in Congress, but now even Elijah Cummings—the epitome of integrity and respect—which may well empower his “base”—cannot, simply cannot, continue.

People of good will must tell their Congressional representatives—Democrat or Republican—that this is not who we are, that his “values” may appeal to his racist base, but this is not acceptable to the majority of thoughtful citizens who end up finding him a grotesque fool.
