  • The May 20 article “Trump Dubs Amash ‘Loser’ After Impeachment Remarks” reported that President Donald Trump lashed out at Republican Congressman Justin Amash, calling him “a total lightweight” and a “loser.” Just one day prior, Mr. Trump threatened to wipe Iran off the map and completely destroy it. These almost daily incidents of threats and insults suggest that we are living as a nation, in something that might be described as a collective domestic abuse situation.

The characteristic of a domestic abuse situation is that the members of a family continually live in fear of when the abuser will strike again and how violent it will be. The only thing certain is that the abuser will strike out again but one never knows when or what will be the pretext. And so it is with Mr. Trump.

Every day, he finds a new target for his anger and demeaning insults. It may be an international leader, a congressperson, a member of the press or a member of his Cabinet. The only exemptions are the autocrats of the world like Rodrigo Duterte, Mohammed bin Salman or Viktor Orban.

Mr. Trump would not be able to continue this national “abuse” without a horde of enablers, boosters and sycophants that he has surrounded himself with. When a final reckoning comes, these are the ones that have to be held to account.

It is probably the case that most of them are political calculators who estimate that staying in Congress or in his Cabinet for another term depends on granting him free rein and applauding his every violation of civilized human behavior.

Note from KBJ: Let me get this straight, Michael. You and your ilk get to vilify President Trump on a daily basis, lying about him, calling him names, and imputing the worst motives to him, but he doesn’t get to reply? Thank God for Donald Trump. Those of us who voted for him in 2016 will vote for him again in 2020. Suck it up.

  • Jed Babbin nails it. Babbin gets credit for one of the funniest lines in political history. When France refused to support the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Babbin said, “Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion.”

  • Re “Democrats’ move toward impeachment picks up steam” (Page A1, May 22): The president and his appointees are flaunting their insolent disrespect for Congress and the American people. To allow this un-American behavior would be to abrogate the constitutional responsibility of Congress for checks and balances within the government. The House must enforce its subpoenas, and the individuals who have disregarded the law should be fined or incarcerated. The Senate, despite being crippled by its Republican leadership, must speak out against these abuses.

  • .@ianbremmer now admits that he MADE UP “a completely ludicrous quote,” attributing it to me. This is what’s going on in the age of Fake News. People think they can say anything and get away with it. Really, the libel laws should be changed to hold Fake News Media accountable!
