Donald Trump recently tweeted about the sale of the GM Lordstown plant to electric truck maker Workhorse. This was great news for people in that area, some of whom voted for Mr. Trump and believed he could bring back manufacturing and the middle class.
A few days later, we find out that Workhorse is a struggling company that employs less than 100 people and is currently on life support. This is a pattern we have seen throughout his time in office.
He claimed to have saved Carrier Corp. in Indiana, then a year later there were layoffs and a move to Mexico.
He claimed to have disarmed North Korea and a year later, they are firing off missiles and their nuclear program is in full swing.
He announced the GOP’s “big, beautiful health care plan,” which didn’t exist. He claims to have renegotiated the North America Free Trade Agreement, but it is far from being a reality.
He claims China is adding “billions” to the U.S. Treasury in the form of tariffs, but it is the importers and the U.S. consumers who foot the bill for the tariffs.
He even talks of his border wall being under construction when not one foot of it has been started.
He talks of accomplishing more than any president in history. The only problem is that all of Mr. Trump’s “accomplishments” occur only in his mind and on his Twitter account.

….Different opinions are expressed and I make a decisive and final decision – it is a very simple process. All sides, views, and policies are covered. I’m sure that Iran will want to talk soon.

Finally, President Donald Trump has found a way to punish Republicans and Democrats equally. For a wealthy business person, a Kansas farmer or a retiree, a trade war weakens both the American economy and your pocketbook.
The Republican tariff of 1922 was the key to unraveling the American economy, and it led to the Great Depression that began in 1929. If you look at history, you find trade wars lead to depression or to real war in too many cases.
Unfortunately, Twitter blustering will not work in this case. And presidential indifference to economic history has real consequences, not only for the United States, but for all nations trading in a global economy.
Anything Republicans or Democrats can do to restrain Trump’s ego in these trade negotiations will benefit all Americans.
